The Laser Scanner rotates in a circle capturing everything in its path resulting in millions of points being accurately collected for position (x and y) and height (z). The scanner also has an onboard camera which takes panoramic high resolution shots of the surveyed area
Scanning is a brilliant tool for surveying complex sites, or sites where a lot of data is required to be recorded; As builts of structures or buildings for example. Services can be accurately located using Scanning and it is a proven tool in accident and crime scene investigations.
Project Surveyors have used Laser Scanning in the survey of Heritage Buildings and Façade surveys; in Retail and Commercial buildings; in Mechanical Electrical Plumbing Rooms; Structural surveys (steel modelling) and Civil applications. I can see Laser Scanning being used on most surveys very quickly.
