Kell & Rigby were engaged to make the building happen…to ensure the glass cube; the staircase of glass, the genius bar and the wall finishes fit together, flow and give that feeling of seamlessness. They have built the largest apple store in the southern hemisphere, and according to Ron Johnson, Apple’s head of Retail, the glass atrium is comprised of the largest sheets of laminated glass ever created.
With so much glass, stone, stainless steel and wall finishes being manufactured off shore to exacting standards and fire tolerances, it was soon recognized that there was little room for error in the set-out and placement of each element.
Kell & Rigby turned to Project Surveyors to provide the surveying for the fit out and gave us a tolerance to work to plus or minus 1mm. Grids were to be marked over the three levels on the floor, walls and ceiling, creating a 3 dimensional grid setout.
There were a number of site challenges, however having adequate time available, and ensuring multiple redundancies saw a very tight set out indeed matched with a series of specially adapted markings to ensure stability and a single position for a string line.
The main challenge as it turned out was to ensure that the marks were being properly utilized, and redundancies used by the contractors, this included an education component to our brief.
The finished product speaks for itself. The glass fits, the gaps on floor tiling, matches the gaps on the wall panels, which matches those on the ceilings.
As a result of this outcome, we at Project Surveyors were appointed to provide the setout for both the Chatswood and Melbourne Apple Stores, where although smaller, the same issues and exacting tolerances were required.
